Remembering Aaron.

Aaron was more than a workplace statistic.

He was a son, a brother, a mate, and a young man with his whole life ahead of him.

He was fun-loving, full of personality and had a wonderful sense of humour that made people want to be around him. Aaron had a natural ability to connect with people from all walks of life. It didn’t matter who you were or where you came from, if Aaron called you a friend, you were a friend.

A young man full of life.

Aaron was naturally talented and passionate about sport.

He represented his teams across numerous sports, earning places in representative sides and academies through his dedication, ability and determination.

He was the kind of person who brought people together. Someone who made memories, built friendships and left an impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

A dream cut short.

Like many young people entering the trades, Aaron had big dreams for his future.

At just 17 years old, he had started his plumbing apprenticeship, only five weeks into the career he had always wanted. His dream was to become a tradesman and one day build a business alongside his mates, working together across different trades to create homes and a future they were proud of.

That future was tragically taken away far too soon.

A preventable loss.

Aaron lost his life in a workplace incident that should never have happened.

A decision was made to remove safety pins from an excavator quick hitch to save time when changing the bucket. When the hydraulics failed, the bucket released and struck Aaron. He did not stand a chance.

Aaron’s death was not the result of an unavoidable accident. It was the result of safety procedures not being followed. A decision that changed his family’s lives forever.

Seeking change from tragedy.

Following Aaron’s death, the company he worked for was prosecuted under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 for failures relating to workplace health and safety duties.

While no change can bring Aaron back, his family is determined that his life and his story create meaningful change for others.

Green Hats for Aaron was created from a belief that a simple visual identifier could help protect young workers entering the trades, giving supervisors and experienced workers an immediate reminder that someone may need additional guidance, support and care.

Aaron’s legacy.

Aaron’s life was far too short, but the impact he has had continues.

Through Green Hats for Aaron, his story can help start conversations, encourage safer workplaces and remind everyone on site that behind every worker is a family waiting for them to come home.

Every apprentice deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and return home safely.
