Introducing

Green Hats for Aaron.

The Green Hats for Aaron initiative is a simple idea designed to create a safer workplace culture.

We are advocating for changes to workplace safety requirements so that apprentices and new workers wear a high-visibility green hard hat wherever head protection is required.

Why Green Hats are needed.

Apprentices and young workers are some of the most vulnerable people on construction sites. While they receive training and inductions, there is currently no simple, universally recognised way for others on site to immediately identify who is new, inexperienced and still learning.

More than just numbers.

Workplace incidents do not just happen to numbers on a report.
Behind every statistic is a person, a family and a future that has changed forever.

State Insurance Regulatory Authority reportable claims from 2020–2025 recorded:

1,515

Claims involving workers
aged 15–19.

9,016

Claims involving workers
aged 20-24.

74%

Of claims involved falls, being struck, or hit by objects.

Why green?

The colour green has long represented someone who is new, learning and developing their skills. A green hat creates an immediate visual reminder:

“This person is still learning. Look out for them.”

Immediate Identification

Supervisors and experienced workers can instantly recognise apprentices and new workers who may require additional guidance or support.

The benefits.

Simple To Implement

The initiative can be introduced through TAFE programs, workplace inductions and toolbox discussions.

How it works.

1

Apprentice Begins Their Career

A new worker enters the trade and receives their green hard hat.

2

The Team Knows They’re Learning

Supervisors and workers have a clear visual reminder to provide additional guidance and oversight.

3

Skills Grow Over Time

Once competencies are achieved, the green hat transitions to standard PPE.
